The Kenya African National Union (KANU) party has said they will not field a candidate in Kiambaa constituency and instead they will rally behind a candidate from the Jubilee party.
According to George Wainaina KANU national executive director said that in the spirit of alliance with JP and consultations with kiambaa residents it was agreed that kiambaa belongs to JP.
“Kanu has joined hands with other leaders who include Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula and also the president is with us in the alliance. On behalf of KANU under the alliance do not have a candidate for Kiambaa and we are not in any way going to have a candidate within that coalition,” said Wainaina.
Wainaina said that under the association which the political parties came together their preferred candidate is businessman and political leader Kariri Njama who is a member of Jubilee party.
“We have confirmed that Kariri is a member of JP and through support of the President Uhuru Kenyatta who is the JP party leader we will support a candidate from his JP,” said Wainaina.
Wainaina said that anyone who wants to vie for Kiambaa seat the residents have since decided no one from another party apart from Jubilee will be elected.
He said that there should be free and fair nominations within Jubilee Party adding those who are interested to declare and fight it out in nominations rather than the party fronting someone.
Kiambaa is looking forward to a by-election when the speaker of the National assembly Justin Muturi will declare the seat vacant after Member of Parliament Paul Koinange died out of covid-19 related implications.
Kariri while announcing he will be vying for Kiambaa seat dispelled social media rumours that he has ditched JP saying he is still an active member of JP.
“My membership number is JP 19347 anybody who has doubt can confirm. We are behind the President and the Jubilee Party ideologies and we support the president and we will finish the journey with him,” said Kariri.
Kariri called on JP not to front any candidate and allow proper and fair nominations so that Kiambaa people can have their say on who to lead them.
“We do not support a preferred candidate by the party and Kiambaa residents have talked about it and it is only fair that those interested in vying to come out and battle it out in a free and fair nomination,” said Kariri.
Njeri Joe a Kiambaa resident said that for political parties to give Jubilee party to be the preferred party in Kiambaa shows respect for the president and a show of honour to the Koinange.
“We are for the Jubilee party to still be in control of Kiambaa and it is an honour to our late Mp as he was a true supporter of the Jubilee administration where we still believe in our president in delivering for the country and Kiambaa,” said njeri.
Samuel Mwaura a kiambaa elder said that Kiambaa residents are behind the issues that the president is pushing forward which include the building Bridges Initiative (BBI) which is beneficial to the common Mwananchi.
“Jubilee party is for BBI and we are behind any initiative or leader who is supporting what is beneficial to us wananchi. We are also supporting Kariri to be our Jubilee party leader for parliament,” said Mwaura.
Kariri ran as an independent candidate in 2017 polls but was defeated by late Paul Koinange who clinched the seat for a second time in a Jubilee party ticket the first time winning the seat on a TNA ticket in 2013 polls.
